Why Pocahontas?

As a child, I was very fascinated by the beauty and wonder of Disney movies, and always loved to play as them, even though I didn't have any costumes to wear of them outside Halloween. Because of my long dark hair and tan skin, I often played as Princess Jasmine, Esmeralda, or Pocahontas.

I loved how passionate Pocahontas was about her land, and her people, and how she dreamed of adventure. I am still always inspired by her character to never just settle, and to always keep chasing new dreams.

About This Costume

This was one of my very first outfits that I draped onto a dressform, so it was a bit wonky, but overall came out somewhat successfully! The costume was done in microsuede, which frays very badly, so I had to use three whole bottles of Fray Check on strips of white microsuede in order for the fringe to not fall apart.

I had gone through a few iterations of the necklace, one was bought and I attached a feather to it, since I was never sure if I should interpret the necklace pendant as a feather, stone, shell, tooth, or some other kind of bead. Later on, I painted another necklace and interpreted the pendant as a flat shell.
